An Introduction to Troll Bashing...

Generally, if I say anything about troll-bashing, or having a particularly trolly day, I get some funny looks. Most people don't use those terms in every day language. However, in reality, "troll" is code for "joy-stealing-minion-of-worry-and-despair." Ever have those days when it feels like everything is going wrong, and you find it really hard to trust in God's bigger plan on that particular day? That's what my sister and I termed "trolly days," because it feels like there are invisible ugly little trolls lurking around under your feet, and stealing your joy at every turn. So what do you do with those trolls? Bash them of course.

My sister once sent me an encouraging email, that made me laugh, as well as think about my attitude towards a discouraging day. This is what she said:

"I know it's easier said than done- but bash those trolls without mercy, clomp them over the head with the Bible if need be, and wear boots. Boots make you feel like you can beat anything- or at least kick it really hard. :)"
(Erin Brown- 10/25/2010)

I was struck by the wisdom of this advice- (and the truth of the power of wearing boots!) and decided that it was a strategy to adopt if I was to win this war! So how do we practically "bash trolls"? Here are some ideas, both light-hearted and serious:

- Take a deep breath- slow down whatever you're doing. When you're moving too fast, it's easy to get tripped by those "tricksy" trolls.
- Drink some hot tea- preferably with lots of sugar.
- If you have a copy of Streams in the Desert- pull it out and read today's passage- not to mention opening up the Word of God! You have not been abandoned in a pit full of trolls, even when it feels like it!! :)
- Make a list of favorite scripture verses to turn to that talk about God's power and sovereignty. (I've got one started in my journal that I add to continually)
- Remember to smile- and remember that the reasons you smile are still around. :) You can even make a list of those things to hang up somewhere where you'll see it often.
- Wear bright colors. Even if its only your socks, it's hard to let the trolls run all over you if you start smiling every time you look down!
- Listen to some upbeat music (I suggest Newsboys)- or go find a friend to talk to. Trolls can attack easiest when we are alone with our fears.
- Most importantly, remember that God is in control, not you- and that you can bash trolls with the power of God as you live in His strength instead of your own.

This is hardly an all-inclusive list, but it's a start. The purpose of this blog is for some troll-bashing adventures, and for some chronicles in the life of the Williams family. Whatever happens in our life, we know that trusting God's grace in spite of those pesky trolls is the best option, and we hope to encourage you along the way. :)

Blessings!
